Letter of proposal
Dear Mr. Copeland and Graduation Project Advisory Board:
I’ve been actively playing video games for about two years now, I have a real passion for the games I play and a real appreciation for the people who make them. I started playing World of Warcraft when I was fourteen years old, during this time I was going through somewhat of a rough spot in my life. The game gave me an escape, and I was able to make many online friends through playing it. For my senior project I plan on creating my own RPG (role-playing game.) I have a lot of knowledge about computers and video games themselves, however I know nothing about creating them. Most games are created with multiple people on a team, I will not have this luxury as I will be creating this game by myself. I hope to fluent in game design after this project, as I am planning on actually going into the game design field after I graduate and I feel like knowing how to design games will be a very valuable skill for my future.
Although video games are somewhat new to this century, the history behind them is incredibly interesting. I plan on writing my research paper about the history of game design, where video games currently are, and the predicted future of where they will be. I plan on starting from the beginning with the very first video game created in 1958, continuing with current production of complete virtual reality games, and finishing with the future of where games will be if technology continues to advance. I am going to put a large focus on complete virtual reality games because there are many varying opinions on the subject, many consider complete virtual reality dangerous and unethical, while other are extremely excited to see it happen. I plan to use the internet, books, my own personal knowledge, and help from my mentor to obtain the information needed to write about these things. I will accurately site the sources from which I found my information on my webpage giving credit to those who rightly deserve it.
My practical experience will be the actual creation of the game, the product of my project will be the game itself. My game will be in complete correspondence with my paper, I plan to create a somewhat “old-fashioned” game using the advanced technology I currently own. I want my game to be symbolic of how far video games have come, and how the sky is the limit. I plan on documenting my time with both pictures and videos, I will include pictures of me working on my game at home and with my mentor. I am going to also include a video of my desktop as I am working on the program to give a basic idea of how the program I am using works. My mentors name is Zachary Wooten, Zach is a Computer Science teacher at Erwin High School. Zach is an expert on computers, he knows many different scripting and coding problems that I can use as I work on my game. Zach is going to show me the basics of the program GameMaker, I plan on using this program to create my game. GameMaker is a free program so the cost of this project will be minimal, I own computer hardware and plan on meeting Zach at Erwin High School. Zach has agreed to help me free of charge, the only cost will be transportation to and from meeting my mentor. I’m estimating a total of twenty hours on this project, the time with my mentor will be spent with Zach teaching me how to work the program, and the remainder will be me working on my project.
I understand that plagiarism is unethical and wrong, taking someone else’s work and claiming it as my own is unjust. MLA format will be used to site all of my sources, including websites and books.
