20 Questions for mentor
1. How long have you been interested in computers?
A: It started in high school when me and a few friends started messing around with code and creating websites.
2. What caused your interest in computers?
A: I've always been very math interested, I liked that you could use math in combination with technology.
3. Did you play video games as a child?
A: Definitely, I remember my first PlayStation and the countless hours I spent playing on it.
4. What was/is your favorite video game?
A: Anything Mario! Mario kart, super smash brothers, I love them all!
5. What type of computer/hardware do you own at home?
A: I have both a desktop and laptop at home, I actually built my own desktop and it's massive.
6. What is the best time to contact you?
A: Weekdays anytime past 4, weekend any time past 10.
7. When is the best time to meet?
A: Weekends would probably be best, it's when I have the most free time.
8. What is your favorite program to teach to students?
A: I enjoy teaching the dynamics of computers to students, because I am also able to incorporate math and the students are able to connect the two.
9. What kind of degree do you have/what did you study in college?
A: I studied electrical engineering and I have a bachelors in mathematics.
10. How long did it take you to gain the skills you have?
A: Quite some time, I attended two different universities.
11. How often do you have to interact with people in your field?
A: I get called to help when there's a computer problem at the school, and I also attend various conferences and seminars.
12. How/where can you meet like-minded people?
A: Computer engineering conferences and seminars is your best bet.
13. Do you think video games have a negative influence over others?
A: It depends on the individual, some video games are incredibly violent while others are just fun ways to pass the time.
14. How do you think video games have changed over time?
A: The graphics have improved greatly, they have also gotten more realistic and complex.
15. How has technology changed over time?
A: Technology has become more compact, with greater abilities and speed.
16. What is your favorite type of video games?
A: I enjoy role-playing games that have a fun historically accurate story line.
17. Do you think virtual reality will happen in the near future?
A: I have no idea, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happened in my lifetime at the rate technology is advancing.
18. What are your thoughts on virtual reality?
A: I'm not very educated on he subject, but it seems like a really interesting idea.
19. How do you predict games will change in 10 years?
A: I think they will become crazy realistic! With way more possibilities of feeling like you're actually inside the game.
20. Do you think video games can be used in a positive way?
A: Yes, I've read a few articles on video games being used for therapeutic reasons and being successful.
Mentor Bio
Zachary Wooten is my mentor, he is a math and computer engineering teacher at Erwin High School, he is a Erwin High School graduate (2001-2005), Valedictorian, All-Conference Basketball / Conference Champs. He attended Clemson University, (2005-2009) studied electrical engineering and secondary education (math.) He is a UNC-Asheville graduate (2009-2001) he has a bachelors in mathematics with teaching licensure for grades 6-12, he is a Burroughs Wellcome Scholar.
