The history of video games relates to the design of video games perfectly, history and design go hand in hand. As equipment and programs progress so does the design of the games themselves, the graphics become better, the game runs smoother and faster, and more features will be added. The game I am going to create will be made with present-day technology, this will give a good idea of what the technology in this day is like.
I know very little about game design itself, however I know many things about video games. I know how the basic coding and creation of graphics works, and I plan to apply this knowledge to my work. The program I am going to use to create my game is called GameMaker, this application is very user friendly and somewhat easy to navigate. I have never learned how to operate this program, but my mentor plans on teaching me the basic code of the program and showing me how it works.
I feel like designing a game that I am satisfied with will be challenging for me. I am somewhat of a perfectionist and hate to do anything without my full effort, doing something in an unknown program will be a challenge for me because it will be hard to perfect. Although learning new programs on computers is challenging, I plan to learn a lot about the program as I go, I do not plan on becoming an expert at this program but I plan to be able to thoroughly work it.
The cost of this project sis going to be minimal, I am going to use the free application GameMaker to create the game and my mentor has agreed to help me free of charge. The only cost will be the cost of transportation, I plan on meeting my mentor at Erwin High School. I own a high quality computer that will be able to handle the software, there are also computers at Erwin High School, so I will be able to work with my mentor and at home.
I hope to learn how to create and present my own video game effectively. Knowing how to create my own video game will be a vital skill for me as I plan on studying game design in college. I will have somewhat of a head start compared to other students studying the same thing, the game design business is very competitive so knowing how to operate the program beforehand will give me a major advantage. Knowing how to effectively present and share my ideas is also a valuable skill in the game design industry, I will have to present my ideas to potential bosses and be able to get my point across.
I will be documenting pictures and videos of me working with my mentor, I will also take screenshots on my computer screen and incorporate them into my webpage. I plan on computing a video of my computer screen while I am actually working in the GameMaker program, I will do a voice over explaining the basics of how the program works. The video will be fairly short to save time, but it will definitely cover the essentials. I will also include pictures of me working on the game at home, I will be sure to include pictures of myself with the computer screen to prevent anything incriminating.
I plan on creating a RPG, (role-playing game) many people are interested in medieval times, a time before technology where many adventures can be gone on and fantasy creatures exist. I am going to incorporate many fantasy creatures into my game, but I plan to put a twist on the villains and heroes. Generally the dragons and orcs are considered the bad guys, while the unicorns and elves are considered the good guys. In my game I will have somewhat of a role reversal, I do not think it’s fair that these fantasy creatures get a bad rep. The stereotypical evil creatures will aid the hero on his quest to slay the stereotypical good creatures. The game will be set in a historical type of time period, but I will be using modern-day technology to create it.
In my final presentation I plan on presenting my actual video game, I will give a demonstration on how the game works and possible let one of the judges play it themselves. I will also present the video I am going to create of my desktop in the GameMaker program, I will record the entire process of me creating the game and then speed up the video to show progress. I will slow down the video in some parts so I can voice over and explain the basic essentials of how the program works.
I am going to spend at least five hours with my mentor, in these five hours I plan on my mentor teaching me the basics of the program and letting him check up on my work. I plan on spending at least twenty hours by myself creating the game at home, I will be working on the game after school and on weekends and holidays. A lot of time will go into this game and I plan on documenting my time as needed.
My mentor’s name is Bob Bob, Bob works at Erwin High School teaching Computer Science. Bob is an expert in his field, he is very good with computers and knows various scripting languages. Bob is going to teach me the basics of the program GameMaker, once I know how to work the program I will do the majority of the creation at home alone. I will periodically check in with Bob and show him my progress to get his input on how things are going.
